On the afternoon of April 18, as International Chinese Language Day approached, the School of International Education launched a grain rain labor experience activity as one of its International Chinese Language Day series. Led by teachers, international student representatives from the Republic of the Congo, Bangladesh, Nigeria and other countries visited Liangyuan, the school’s labor education base. They embarked on a distinctive labor experience, experienced the joy of farming in the Grain Rain season, and gained in-depth insight into traditional Chinese farming culture.
Feng Junying, Director of the Chinese Language Curriculum Center, combined the characteristics of the Grain Rain solar term to systematically introduce the origin and significance of International Chinese Language Day, as well as the traditional farming wisdom and cultural connotation embodied in the 24 solar terms. During the interactive session, international students actively shared their knowledge of Start of Spring, Pure Brightness, Winter Solstice and other solar terms, creating a lively atmosphere. Afterwards, Teacher Feng led the students into Liangyuan to identify various vegetable crops, explained the whole process from sowing and maintenance to harvesting, and vividly interpreted the profound meaning of farming proverbs such as sow in spring and reap in autumn and hard work brings good harvest. In the practical session, international students worked in groups to loosen soil, remove weeds and water crops under the guidance of teachers. While working and communicating with each other, they enjoyed the fun of farming, learned Chinese in an immersive environment, and appreciated the unique charm of traditional Chinese farming culture.
Integrating Chinese language teaching with traditional farming culture experience, this activity adopted the teaching model of explanation, interaction and practical practice. It effectively improved international students’ Chinese application ability and enabled them to deeply understand the profound heritage of Chinese farming civilization through hands-on labor.
